Building Construction 2

Project 1: Skeletal Construction "A Shelter For One"

Through this project, I have learnt the skeletal structure and its relevant structural components and how it reacts under the pressure of loading. By understanding the skeletal structure, we are required to make a shelter of base 0.75m x 0.75m and height of 1.5m. Besides, the shelter should be elevated 5 inches from the ground in order to withstand the load placed on top of it. On top of it, we are required to use joints that reflect the actual joints of the structure and uses recycle materials.

As a result, our group have decided to use cane as our materials for our shelter due to its durability and flexibility to bend depending on its sizes. Throughout the building process, we are able to analyse the design and construction process of our shelter. Besides, I also have the chance to understand the necessity to provide a proper shelter which can protect the user from any potential weather condition for example strong wind or heavy rain.

In the end, I would say I have learnt a lot from this project and I am really glad to be able to work together with my groupmates as we cooperated really well as a team.

Project 2: Understanding Forces in Solid Structure and Surface Structure

In this project, I have understood the how solid structure and surface structure reacts under loading and how it works under pressure. Besides, we also able to identify the basic structural systems in construction. Moreover, I am also able to differentiate the skeletal, solid and surface construction systems in terms of loads and forces acting on structural elements.

In this project, we chose to our researched building as the Lyon Satolas Airport Railway Station. The reasons we chose this building is due to the skeletal system of the building and its ability to create a wide space with minimum skeletal structure. This building clearly shows the characteristics of Calatrava's architectural style
